Sydney beginner surf beaches, pick your corner

Sydney's beaches have plenty of learner-friendly corners. These picks come from Destination NSW's learn-to-surf guide.

Updated 2026-10-30 · by LOOSE

Surf outside the red-and-yellow flags. The flagged area is for swimmers. Watch for rips: if one pulls you out, paddle across it, parallel to the beach. Never surf alone, and ask a lifeguard if you're unsure. Ideal learner waves are about 1 to 2 ft, around waist high.

North Bondi

North end of Bondi Beach, NSW 2026

Destination NSW says it has the gentlest waves in Sydney's eastern suburbs, which suits learners, and summer afternoons often bring an offshore north-east wind. Lets Go Surfing runs lessons at Bondi, including women-only groups.
