San Diego beginner surf spots, first waves

San Diego has plenty of breaks that suit first-timers. These picks follow the San Diego Tourism Authority's learn-to-surf guide.

Surf near lifeguards and take a lesson for your first sessions. Avoid the jetty at South Mission, which the tourism board calls an experts-only break. Winter swells can make even "easy" beaches big.

Gently sloping sand, semi-protected water and lots of outfitters. It has long been San Diego's top spot for new surfers. Surf Diva (founded in 1996 as the first all-female surf school) and Everyday California both teach here.
