Mammoth's Unbound parks, lap by lap
Mammoth Mountain's Unbound Terrain Parks are one of the best-known park setups in North America. Mammoth's 25/26 fact sheet lists 10 parks, 2 halfpipes, 100+ jibs and 50+ jumps, spread across both sides of the mountain. Here's what each park is for and how to get to it.
Mammoth's parks page shows each park's open or closed status live. Park layouts, lifts, hours and ticket rules change through the season (and with the snow), so check the linked official page on the day you go.
Beginner: the Playgrounds
Disco, Wonderland & Eagle Playgrounds
Disco: Main Lodge, Discovery Chair (Chair 11) · Wonderland: Canyon Lodge, Chair 7 · Eagle: top of Eagle Express (Chair 15), on the run "Water Tank"
One small park at each base area: gentle rollers, small snow spines, mini boxes and jumps that grow as you go down. This is where to try your first box or first straight air without an audience of pros.
Intermediate
Forest Trail
Main Lodge, Unbound Express (Chair 6)
Mammoth calls it the stepping stone to its big parks: small to medium jumps and jibs, an 11-foot halfpipe, and the Twilight Zone banked slalom through the trees near the bottom. It's on the same chair as Main Park, so laps are short.
Carousel
Roller Coaster Express (Chair 4)
Bowls, spines, hips and other snow shapes instead of a straight jump line. Mammoth describes it as surfy and skatey and says it takes patience to find the speed, which is exactly why transition riders love it.
Advanced & expert
South Park
Roller Coaster Express (Chair 4)
Mammoth's longest park run, with big jump and jib lines. The resort's tip: it gets early light and is usually less affected by wind than the rest of the parks.
Jibs & More
Next to South Park, Roller Coaster Express (Chair 4)
Rails, boxes and wallrides top to bottom plus snow transitions. It sits lower on the mountain, so it's the move when the weather up top isn't cooperating.
Snake Run
Off South Park, Roller Coaster Express (Chair 4)
Also called the "BMX Run": short, poppy jumps and berms that ride like a pump track. If you come from bikes or skate, this one will make sense straight away.
Main Park
Main Lodge, Unbound Express (Chair 6)
Mammoth's largest park: big jumps, technical rails and the 22-foot halfpipe. Advanced to pro riders only. The resort names the Unbound parks the official training ground for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard teams.
The Hemlocks
Hike-to area accessed via Chair 14
When the snow stacks up, the park crew builds kickers into natural step-downs here. It's big-mountain freestyle into powder, for expert riders only.
Tips
- Two hubs. Main Park and Forest Trail run off Chair 6 at Main Lodge. South Park, Jibs & More, Snake Run and Carousel are all off Chair 4. Pick a side for the day.
- Long season. Mammoth's park map page says the season typically runs November to June, and it often keeps a small park going late in spring.
- Altitude. Mammoth Lakes sits high in the Eastern Sierra. Drink water and take your first day easy.
Park etiquette (applies everywhere)
- Orange ovals mean freestyle terrain. Resorts like Mammoth and Big Bear mark terrain parks with an orange oval. Read the signs at the entrance before you drop in.
- Scope first, then hit. Ride your first lap past the features, not over them. Look at the takeoff and the landing.
- One rider per feature. Call your drop, wait your turn and clear the landing fast.
- Start small. Every resort here has a beginner or progression zone. Work up from there.
- Helmet. Some parks require one; wear one in all of them.
